Corfu town - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - sets the scene for the first impression for travellers arriving by ship at Corfu's port. Best seen on foot, the old town is a mixture of the medieval and the modern. The Old and the New fortress bear the "lion" insignia of what was once a Venecian Republic. Walk along the "Liston" in the biggest public square of the Balkans and discover for yourself all the major attractions. Some of the "must see" in Corfu are the  Asian Art Museum in the Palace of St. Michael & George (once home of the British rulers), the Mon Repos Estate (the former royal residence where a small ancient theatre of pre-historic times is situated in a green landscape), the Pontikonisi (or mouse island) which for years was the trademark of Corfu, the Ionian Parliament building, the town hall square, the Liston with its caffeterias (originally built for Napoleon's troops), the Douglas Obelisk, the Archeological museum and St. Spyridon church (patron saint of Corfu - next to the church is the building that hosted the 1st Greek bank in 1864).

You will need a whole day to explore Corfu town on your own, perhaps lingering along the Liston front of the Esplanade - the only place in Greece where cricket matches are still played - a legacy of British rule. Try a stroll in the "Kantounia" (narrow streets where everyone gets lost) and find your way out of Campielo which is the oldest neighborhood οn the island.
Corfu's old town involves walking over level terrain in places and spots of amazing beauty where some claim that they feel the echo of the medieval times. Corfu shopping involves a plethora of shops as well as a selection of restauratns, tavernas and bars which will satisfy the most demanding of you.
