Corfu (or Kerkyra) was one of the world's top holiday destinations during the 80's and 90's, and continues to enjoy immense popularity. Corfu holidays are defined by the endless olive groves, the beautiful and varied scenery of a long coastline, including some wonderful sandy beaches, picturesque villages, a big selection of activities and the historic atmosphere of Corfu old town.
Corfu is the most westerly point of Greece and has an area of 570 s.k. with about 120000 residents. It has two mountains (906m the highest) and its surrounded by a number of smaller islands such as Paxos, Antipaxos, Othoni, Erikousa and Mathraki, which are also worth visiting and well known for their unspoilt beauty.
Corfu island in the center and the north is described by the lush vegetation (60% of the land is covered by olive groves) and top holiday resorts are strung out along an amazing coastline, alternating with mountains and valleys and narrow coastal roads with stunning views. The west side of the island has the most exotic beaches and unforggetable sunsets. Heading south, the vegetation gets bushy and low-lying. There is a protected lake (Korission lake), home to a great variety of flora and fauna and an extensive forest of Mediterranean cedars. Beaches in this area are all sandy, quieter and there is a lot more privacy.
All kinds of tourist accommodation amenities are to be found here , with over 150000 beds available in hotels, villas, studios and apartments, hundreds of restaurants and tavernas, several water sports stations, water parks, boat trips, excursions and rentals, there is a portfolio of fun for everyone.
In the Corfu beach guide you will find a variety of beaches for every taste: pebble and sandy, quiet and busy, shallow or deep waters. Some have uniquely beautiful rock formations, some others are ideal for families or privacy. All the beaches in our guide have been awarded with the EU's blue flag for their cleanliness and the quality of their facilities.
