The delights of Corfu are splashed across the latest Spanish edition of the leading travel magazine InStyle.
Headlined 'Mediterranean Winter' an eight-page article in the fashion and lifestyle magazine features Spanish actress Carolina Bang touting Corfu as the island to be seen in the winter months.
The story sub-heading reads: “Actress Carolina Bang reveals Corfu, a charming town where ancient culture blends with the blue sea. Pack your suitcase and enjoy a warm and, above all, exquisite winter!” The article praises Corfu as "a great destination for those who seek the light of the Mediterranean, even in the coldest of months."
The feature shows the Spanish actress sipping cocktails outside Corfu's Byzantine Fortress and strolling around the narrow streets and small boutiques.
"Corfu is a wonderful island, a relaxing haven of peace in the heart of the Mediterranean," she says.
In a media trip organised jointly by Marketing Greece and the Greek Embassy in Madrid, as part of a strategic positioning to promote Corfu as an autumn-winter destination in Spain, Bang visited the Diva of the Ionian in early October. In the article, she makes recommendations for travellers, including museums worth visiting and Corfiot dishes, while the story also features images of coffee culture at the Liston Arcade, traditional tavernas on town squares, beachscapes from above and hidden churches.
"Besides its beaches, Corfu is a culturally rich town; it fascinates me. In every corner, there is something amazing!" says Bang, who was drawn to the maze of alleyways in the city centre, the mix of neoclassical buildings, palaces, museums and old cafes and “the number of temples of various religions that coexist in the city,” she adds.
The initiative may well pave the way for other Greek islands to cash in on attracting more winter visitors.
