Mouse Island (or Pontikonissi in Greek) was the trademark of Corfu during the previous decades and the first image for all visitors coming by plane. It's not clear where the name comes from. Some say that the island was full of mice in the past, some others that it has a mouse shape if you look it from top.
There is also a legend that refers to the island as the ship of Odysseus which Poseidon turned to stone.
Mouse island can be reached from Kanoni are, in town. The are several small boats departing from Vlacherena church very often (during summer time only). Since the island is situated close to the end of the airstrip there is a chance that you will see the airplanes flying a few meters above your head during landing.
There is free parking area if you go by car. Bus will drop you off 300m before the church.
