The monastery of the Virgin Mary in Paleokastritsa was built in 1228 and together with the Achillion Palace are some of Corfu's major attractions. It is a classic example of Greek monastic architecture.
The church of the Monastery is decorated with painted icons and frescoes covering the walls and the ceilings. The outer areas have a view over the steep sides of this promontory that separates the beaches of the Paleokastritsa resort. Whilst visiting the Monastery, don't miss the chance to view the traditional olive press and the small museum of icons, sacred books and relics from the Byzantine period.
There is a small shop selling olive products and religious artifacts.
The distance from Corfu town is 35 km. Free parking is available near the Monastery. Entry to churches and monasteries in Greece is free of charge but keep in mind that as a religious site and place of worship, women should wear long skirts or trousers and have their shoulders covered.
While you are in the area, enjoy a wonderful swim at one of the beaches, or follow the footpaths for some glorious views. Try to avoid visiting during days with cruise ship traffic, especially morning hours.
You can visit it and get full-guiding of the monastery as well as a refreshing dive in Paleokastritsa beaches if you book the full-day (8hrs) Corfu sightseeing tour.
Don't forget to throw a coin to the well and make a wish!
NOTE: The Monastery is closed daily between 13:00 and 15:00.
